InBetween House by Koji Tsutsui Architect & Associates

The InBetween House, designed by Tokyo based architecture firm Koji Tsutsui Architect & Associates, is a collection of small combined cottages built outside of Tokyo in the mountains. The clients wanted a simple & elegant retreat from their hectic city lives. The collection of 5 structures, each with its own purpose, are built with independent roof lines that bleed into each other, creating both intimate interior spaces & covered “exterior” passages.

The design intent of this construction method was to create an architectural language similar to that of the city, with separate buildings and alleyways, allowing a free-form arrangement so that each space is perfectly situated to its surrounding landscape.

The Aldas Project: 366 Drawings for Good is the beautiful brainchild of artists Kristy Modarelli. The project began on January 1st, 2012 and will continue through the end of the year. Kristy makes a drawing every day, a daunting task in itself, and puts the images up for sale on the Aldas Project Etsy page for $100 each.

The “for Good” part of the project is that Kristy will donate $25 for each sold print to one of her 3 favorite charities: 826 National, The Schoerke Foundation, and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society with the purchaser choosing which charity he/she would like the money to go to.

Linotype: The Film

I can’t wait until Linotype: The Film is released to the public sometime this summer. The film, by producer/director Doug Wilson & director of photography Brandon Goodwin, with sound by Jess Heugel, charts the rise and fall and rise again of the Linotype type setting machine. Thomas Edison once describe the Linotype as the “Eighth Wonder of the World.”

The film seeks to answer three main questions about the Linotype: What place does the Linotype have in the age of new technology, should the machine be shoved into a museum and left to rust, and why should anyone care about typography or the technology of communication? The film is full of beautiful shots of the machine working and talks to tons of quirky Linotype masters as well as a few brave souls trying to keep the technology alive.
