Type Love: FF Bau by Christian Schwartz for Font Font

Type Love: FF Bau by Christian Schwartz for Font Font is a beautiful typeface with roots all the way back to a typeface known only as Grotesk. Grotesk, an early predecessor to Helvetica, was originally introduced by the Schelter & Giesecke foundry in Leipzig around 1880 and was used as the Bauhaus’s main workhorse type for some time.

In 1999 typographer Erik Spiekermann asked designer Christian Schwartz to create a revival of Grotesk that would retain the original typefaces spirit and warmth while updating it for today’s typographic needs. FF Bau, named in homage to the original types most noted users, was born in 4 weights (plus italics), the lightest 3 being drawn directly from Schelter & Giesecke’s original drawings.
